Have you ever experienced or witnessed childhood or adult physical, emotional or sexual abuse?
Have you ever experienced or witnessed an event that you perceived as life-threatening; such as physical assault, sexual assault, accidents, alcohol or drug abuse, illnesses, medical complications, or employment in occupations exposed to war or disaster ?
Have you ever abused someone and later regretted it?
Have you been bullied or mobbed before?
Following the exposure to trauma, the mind is trying to process the event, to make sense of it. The memories people are trying to avoid are constantly being re-played on the imaginary screen. Most people adapt by shutting down, becoming emotionally “numb” in order to be invulnerable. If it remains untreated, their emotional numbing gets worse over time affecting their life, including most importantly their relationships and self-esteem.
Abused people typically have some of the following symptoms:
- Flashbacks
- Nightmares, sleep disturbances
- Feelings of helplessness
- Blaming or beating themselves up
- Rejection of help
- Suicidal ideation
- Feelings of injustice
- Loss of appetite
- Reduced drive
- Emotional embitterment
- Unable to feel certain feelings
- Unable to recall major parts of the trauma
- Single negative life event precipitates the onset of an illness
- Avoiding any stimuli associated with the trauma
- Avoiding behaviours, places, or people that might lead to distressing memories
- Using alcohol, cigarettes or drugs to cope with the situation
